Since 1952, Donnini’s has been part of Melbourne’s Italian dining culture, welcoming generations of families to Lygon Street and preserving a tradition built on hospitality, craftsmanship and a deep respect for Italian food.
Fernando and Elena Donnini began that story in Carlton, at a time when the neighbourhood was the heart of Melbourne’s Italian community.
Their restaurant became more than a place to dine. It was a place to gather, to celebrate and to feel a sense of belonging.
Today, Donnini’s remains proudly family-run, with the fourth generation continuing the work that began more than seven decades ago.
Many of our customers first visited with their parents and grandparents and now return with families of their own.
That intergenerational connection is at the heart of who we are.
In 1982, Donnini’s received the Ciao Italia Award from the President of Italy, recognising it as the best Italian restaurant in Australasia.
In 2025, The Age Good Food Guide awarded Donnini’s a Hat.
Separated by more than forty years, these honours reflect the same enduring philosophy: remain true to our heritage, value quality over fashion and treat every guest as part of the continuing Donnini’s story.
Our pasta is still made by hand.
Our cooking remains grounded in the regional traditions and family recipes that have shaped the restaurant from the beginning.
The dishes may evolve with the seasons, but the principles behind them do not.
As Donnini’s approaches its 75th year, we remain proud of where we have come from, grateful to the generations who have supported us and committed to carrying this remarkable family story forward.
